I posted this rant on a message board. Enjoy.......
I guess this is debateable, but I trully believe that the "cartoony" look is actually much more realistic than the modern "realistic style". Thats right, I said it and thats my opinion (so please don't write trying to change my mind or call me stupid or some other immature variation of the insult that so frequently occurs on most message boards. Its just an opinion and we've all got 'em. Live with it).
What I mean is, the cartoon lends itself to more realistic life expressions than the ever stoic superheroe fare. It just seems to maintain the energetic nature of the "sketch". You see it all the time. You get these great pencilled pages and the inker comes in to "polish" the work and they tear it up. Obviously there are some fantastic inkers out there (and I'm sure their names are filling our opinionated minds as we read) but I will say that I really enjoy the "life" that comes naturally from the artists mind and I really think that same problem occurs when people struggle to go "realistic" (because thats the mind set), working against their natural strengths.
There is this one guy on another board who can never give me a constructive crit because he "prefers my older realistic style". Great, thats swell, just judge my stuff in context. If one eye is way up on the forehead while the other one is closer to the nose, fine, lay it on me. But if I'm Picasso thats what you should expect so crit my work accordingly and within the framework of the artistic intent. Yeah, thats right, we are artists and we are trying to say something more than merely "up,up and away" or "check out my silicone rack".
